Enjoying Echigo Yuzawa through a year
Enjoyed ski at Nozawa-onsen in the best condition in the season
This is the second ski season since I started the Blog. The coldest wave till previous day seemed like to be over. In early morning temperature around condominium was -7℃. It is very likely to become the best powder snow condition of the season. I woke up very early to head for Nozawa-onsen ski site (Nagano prefecture). Although it usually takes 1 hour by car, road surface is frozen hard and it took around 1 hour 20 minutes to ski site parking.

Enjoyed ski at Nozawa-onsen in the best condition in the season

At Nagasaka Gondola I hit pink “Cupid Gondola”. Is there love in the air?
Slopes at the summit is the best conditioned powder snow at the level I have hardly seen before! I tried this time to descend from the summit (1,650m) to the Gondola station (616m) in the morning. It is the downhill course along the ridge of 5km distance, and elevation difference is over 1,000m. I usually take this course as back way from full day ski. This time I go down in the morning time during snow is still powder.
On the site map above, the red line from upper right is the descend course.
To be honest, I made a small mistake as my wearable camera became facing low during the downhill skiing. I wanted to show the magnificent Nagano mountain ridges. It took around 6 minutes from the top to the bottom and I found the snow condition is very different between 2 places.
When I came back to the summit again, it became crystal blue sky. This panorama view is the shot from the top. You can see Mt. Madarao on the left side very clearly. I met a couple from Brisbane (Australia) on the Gondola. They had only storm for 4 days after arriving Nozawa-onsen and finally they met the best day. They said they were going back on weekend. I wish they have brought the beautiful memory home.
This is the distant view from Paradise site.
Watch its wheels. This is “Ski site specified” van.
After Ski is off course Spa cabin in the village (the photo is Oyu cabin in village center). There are 13 such cabins in the village and you can enjoy any cabin at free! However I recommend to leave some money into small box at entrance as villagers are working to maintain those cabins tidy every day. I also make it a rule to leave the money as much as public bath.
Photos are “Ogama” in deep snow, one of spa sources which is used as vegetable wash and kitchen exclusively for villagers even today.
He is “sales clerk” I found in the village. The good thing in Nozawa-onsen is the village still keeps very traditional spa town taste with modern convenience for foreign tourists like Aussie people (it looked like around 1/3 of skiers are Aussie).
